Enhancing Consumer Protection in Eastern African Aviation

Kampala, Uganda – The Eastern African region is taking a significant step towards strengthening consumer protection in the aviation industry. A capacity-building workshop on Annex 6 – Consumer Protection regulations of the Yamoussoukro Declaration was held in Kampala, Uganda, from August 26 to 30, 2024.

The workshop, organized by the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) in collaboration with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), aimed to equip delegates with the knowledge and tools necessary to address consumer issues and improve the overall experience for air travelers.

Mr. Fred Bamwesigye, the Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, officially opened the workshop. In his address, he emphasized the growing importance of consumer protection in the aviation sector and highlighted the workshop’s significance in identifying specific consumer concerns, addressing capacity gaps, and sharing global best practices.

Delegates from various Eastern African countries, representatives from the East African Community (EAC), the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), consumer protection organizations, national airlines, and the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority participated in the workshop.

The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • Understanding consumer rights and responsibilities
  • Investigating and resolving consumer complaints
  • Implementing effective consumer protection policies and procedures
  • Enhancing communication and transparency with consumers
  • Leveraging technology to improve consumer services

By strengthening consumer protection in the Eastern African aviation sector, the workshop aims to enhance passenger satisfaction, promote fair competition, and contribute to the overall growth and development of the region’s aviation industry.
