Strengthening Consumer Protection in Eastern African Aviation

Kampala, Uganda – The 5-day capacity-building training workshop on Annex 6 – Regulations on Consumer Protection of the Yamoussoukro Decision for the Eastern African Region concluded on Friday, August 30, 2024, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala.

The workshop, organized by the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in collaboration with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), aimed to enhance consumer protection in the aviation sector within the Eastern African region.

Mr. Waiswa Bageya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport, closed the workshop. In his closing remarks, he highlighted the importance of the aviation sector as a pillar of economic development and emphasized the need for improved service delivery and seamless air travel connectivity within Africa.

The workshop brought together participants from 13 countries, including Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. Officials from the East African Community (EAC) and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) also attended.

The workshop covered a wide range of topics related to consumer protection, including:

  • Understanding consumer rights and responsibilities
  • Investigating and resolving consumer complaints
  • Implementing effective consumer protection policies and procedures
  • Enhancing communication and transparency with consumers
  • Leveraging technology to improve consumer services

The successful completion of the workshop marks a significant step towards strengthening consumer protection in the Eastern African aviation sector. By equipping delegates with the necessary knowledge and tools, the workshop has contributed to improving the overall experience for air travelers in the region.
